Hypnotherapy is about gaining control over your mind, not losing control.
You are in control of deciding to use hypnosis. You are in control of setting your clear intention and outcomes. Most people use hypnosis because they already have less conscious control than they would like. This occurs when subconscious influences are out of alignment with current goals.
In a way, we are in an unhelpful trance whenever we act out behaviors, have thoughts,
or feel emotions that are counter-productive.
Hypnosis is simply the means of accessing a relaxed and powerful state to engage with ourselves helpfully at that influential level. We all do this naturally without even knowing it.
When we watch movies we feel emotions like sadness, fear and joy even though we consciously know it's just two dimensional scripted flashing light on the wall! We day-dream about the past of fantasize about the future in vivid and compelling ways - losing track of our surroundings.
Even while driving a car, we 'drift away'. Our subconscious mind goes on to auto-pilot. Our bodies can drive the car for us while we vividly recall or image another place so that we are 'a hundred miles away', even while driving. Yet our subconscious automatically brings our attention back to the moment when required.
In formal hypnosis, your subconscious also has a protective filter, and natural wisdom. As you listen, it will automatically guide you away from whatever's not necessary for you now. Hypnotic language is 'artfully vague' - which means your subconscious has room to find it's own specific solutions within a general strategic framework.
Hypnosis is not unconsciousness. Your body can enter into a form of sleep that can feel like a deep heavy relaxation, or a freeing weightless floating feeling. Your mind can be more aware of your breathing, the touch of air on your skin, and of your inner landscape.
We're actually more conscious and aware in hypnosis than in daily life.
You're level of awareness can vary during your experience. We naturally drift continually between strong realizations like a hyper-aware insight, and a kind of peaceful spaciousness that makes us wonder if we were asleep. Hypnosis is not sleep, and when that state lasts minutes not hours, and on awakening it feels different to how you feel after a nap or in the morning, then you were not asleep, but enjoying a rejuvenating hypnotic clear experience.
Hypnosis can be a familiar experience, but for most of us with a hectic lifestyle, the peace, stillness and insights can be a rare break from usual consciousness. You won’t lose awareness of what is going on around you – your conscious mind still participates in the experience, it just has a reduced role. The overall effect is a much greater state of awareness than usual, rather than any sense of diminished awareness.
Once you come out of hypnosis you may feel like you’ve had a satisfying rest that’s calming and cleansing for the body and mind. Many people experience an ‘afterglow’, a peaceful serenity that is prominent for a day or more.
“I can’t be hypnotized”. You’re right.
“I can be hypnotized.” You’re right. It’s your choice.
Everyone can benefit from hypnotherapy and have their own experience of the hypnotic state. All that’s required is a genuine and earnest desire to work with the process, giving your subconscious mind full permission to achieve your own healing or personal growth.
To enter a hypnotic state you simply need the ability to relax and the ability to concentrate in the voice of the hypnotherapist and follow instructions. There are differences in the speed, ease and ‘depth’ with which people experience a hypnotic state. Yet entering trance can be seen as a muscle - some people are already fit and are skilled straight away. With a little practice and training others can build their ability to deepen their trance.
Some people require two or three experiences with the MP3s before they realize how successful they actually were in the first place! Others are so enthusiastic that their desire can get in the way of the experience, which is a relaxation and letting go of conscious effort.
Highly analytical or control orientated and are reluctant to hand over control from their conscious mind to their subconscious mind – but either way it is still their mind in control. If there’s a genuine and strong desire to enter hypnosis and heal you can with patience, persistence and positive expectation.
Resistance may even be seen positively – the mind tends to feel more comfortable with the known, even if it’s creating a problem. The mind can sometimes resist an ‘unknown’ positive change, and the stronger the resistance, the greater the perception of the mind that the therapeutic solution will actually create the change. Understanding the process and visualizing the positive outcomes helps build familiarity with the unknown, creating comfort with a change for the better.
Hypnotherapy has been recognized by both the British and American Medical Associations as a psychological and therapeutic discipline since the 1950’s, but its power and scope are only now being widely discovered.
Entertainment vs. Enlightenment
TV programs or stage hypnosis are a world away for hypnotherapy and hypnosis MP3s. Stage hypnotists use selective screening to determine the people most likely to act out for an audience purely for entertainment.
Television is highly edited to suit a short attention span – hypnotherapy enlarges and strengthens your ability to concentrate on a single object in depth.
How creative can you be in helping your self?
Hypnotherapy is useful for regaining health and freedom from a wide variety of mental and physical diseases. It also excels in dealing with more subtle unwanted conditions or unease that impede one’s total wellness.
Hypnotherapy deals with the actual processes in the mind that create these issues. Since so much of our experience as an individual in the world comes from our mind, there are many issues that can also be solved through the mind.
There’s likely to be one particular catalyst that brings you to seek treatment. Once the process and the widespread applications are understood it’s common for people to begin creatively evaluating other areas of their life in which a hypnotherapeutic solution can also be a valuable investment.
